Nancy IMG_2302Nancy is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).  She is a member of the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) and a preceptor for the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLE). She volunteers her time on the Program Board for the DC Area March of Dimes. Nancy specializes in the near term or premature newborn and complex lactation issues. For over thirty years, Nancy has been promoting, supporting and educating new mothers, families and professionals about breastfeeding by developing professional care plans, education models and standards of care in lactation. Nancy considers herself “a first generation lactation consultant.” Board Certified since 1989, Nancy has worked in both hospital and private settings, providing care, education and mentoring new professionals in the field. She is a published author and consultant for Childbirth Graphics, Inc., and Lactation Education Resources (formerly the Georgetown University LC Training Program) and a frequent lecturer in the DC area. In 2006, Nancy also became a Board Certified LaMaze Certified Childbirth Educator and presently teaches prenatal and childbirth classes for new parents.

Lactation Consultant - Mary-Ellen YousemanMary-Ellen has worked as a Certified Lactation Consultant for the last 10 years.  She has a background in pediatric and neonatal intensive care nursing and has worked extensively in the United Kingdom and Australia in a career spanning almost 30 years.  She is passionate about the integrity of the family unit and believes in empowering mothers to help them enjoy the wonder of their newborn infants. Her previous employment before arriving in Washington, DC was as a Child & Family Health Nurse in Canberra, Australia, supporting mothers in the immediate post-partum period. Mary-Ellen complements her lactation skills with experience in educating parents in Infant Sleep & Settling, Infant Massage, and Relaxing into Parenting.

Sharon Curry, BSN, IBCLC-RLC

Sharon has been helping breastfeeding moms for more than 10 years. In 2001, while breastfeeding her own babies, Sharon became a La Leche League Leader and then earned the IBCLC credential in 2006. She has worked individually with mother baby couples as an IBCLC in area hospitals for the past 6 years. Additionally, she has led breastfeeding support groups making her well equipped to help breastfeeding moms from birth, through babyhood, teething, the toddler years and beyond. Sharon believes moms need information to make good parenting choices; she has developed and taught prenatal and back to work breastfeeding classes. She has a background as a Registered Nurse including home care nursing. She believes the home setting is the best place for moms, dads, and babies to get to know each other as they begin their journey as a family.

Dru started her obstetrical nursing career in 2001 after receiving her bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Cincinnati. She served four years active duty as a nurse in the US Air Force. The majority of that time was spent as a labor and delivery nurse; however, Dru did gain experience as a postpartum and nursery nurse. It was apparent early on that she had a love for nursing and lactation.

After separating from the military, she worked as a postpartum nurse to gain more breastfeeding experience.
Dru became a International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) in 2006. She has worked as a lactation consultant in a hospital setting since 2008. She has taught both prenatal and postpartum breastfeeding education to parents.

Joanna Eddy, MA, IBCLC-RLC

Joanna is a postpartum doula who served the DC area for the past six years. She completed her graduate degree in Women and Gender Studies, including coursework in Human Growth and Development to better understand the mental and physical development of mothers and babies.

Joanna focused much of her work on pregnancy and the postpartum period. Specifically, she focused on infant and child development, bonding, and attachment. She began her journey toward International Board Certification over four years earlier while working as a postpartum doula and breastfeeding specialist.

Joanna has worked in the private clinical setting as well as the hospital setting. She has a special interest in reflux, low milk supply and co-sleeping.

Maire Hewitt, RN, IBCLC-RLC

Maire HewittMaire brings years of experience to NVLC, working in hospital and teaching Lactation Consultants, first  in Georgetown University’s Lactation Consultant Training Program(established 1990, the first training  program on the East Coast) and continuing with  the program  today  as Lactation Education Resources.  She is a mentor for the Lactation Board of Examiners, teaching and supporting new lactation consultants in the field.

Maire trained as a nurse in Northern Ireland and has been Board Certified since 1981, the year when the first certification exam was offered. Until last year, Maire worked in a hospital setting, helping new breastfeeding mothers and their babies and teaching prenatal classes. Her special love is the 36 weeker (always a challenge), but happily enjoys working with mothers and babies of all ages.
